Bhutan was historically called Menjong which means Country of Medicinal Plants in Tibetan. Hundreds of species of medicinal herbs are collected all over the country. The traditional Tibetan medicine called Sowa Rigpa is still alive and thriving in Bhutan.
Sowa Rigpa mostly uses pulse measurement for diagnosis and plant based medicines along with acupuncture and acupressure for treatment.
Not far from the Thimphu city centre, there is National Institute of Traditional Medicine with it's Sorig Museum. It houses high and low altitude medicinal plants and many other collections and explanations about the traditional Tibetan and Bhutanese medicine.
On request we can arrange guided tour through the museum by the institute lecturer, who will give expert explanation on Sowa Rigpa and will answer all possible questions.
